Our client, prominent manufacturer of candles from Denmark had an issue where product labels happened to be misplaced during warehouse routine. Such mistakes could lead to situations where their customers receive wrong goods. For extra quality assurance of labeling process it was decided to develop a mobile app that can read barcode labels and see if they match product specifications in database. It was not the first time we developed smartphone mobile solution for warehouse use, but unlike other projects where QR-codes were used - client decided to use Android phones with integrated laser-based barcode reader.
Differences between two technologies?
Laser-based scanners are usually used in mass production industries, supermarkets or warehouses. They are faster, cheaper, can work on further distances, but they are limited to read only linear types of barcodes. If you want to be able to use QR-codes, which can carry more information - you will need to use camera-based readers. It is convenient enough since almost everybody have cameras in their smartphones and tablet devices nowadays. If you wish to spread the world with your commercial advertisement or you want to present your web site link in easily accessible way your best option would probably be to use QR-codes. Such technology is good for passing detailed information to variety of people.
Our role in the project
If you need to process big amount of simple data in timely manner you will probably want to go with laser scanners and barcodes. That’s why our client, as many others in the industry, decided to use this technology and benefit from its reliability and performance.
